St Louis's Church
Presentation
St Louis’s church stands in the heart of the Quartier Haut, the old part of Sète. It is the town’s oldest and largest church known as La Décanale (the Deanery).
Built of stone in 1702 to honour the town’s patron saint, it was designed by the architect Daviler, who had worked with the great Renaissance architect Mansart. In 1989 it was declared a historic monument.
Every year at the Fishermen’s Festival, St Peter’s statue, the patron saint of fishermen, is carried to St Louis’s church for High Mass. Afterwards it is carried in a procession into the sea in homage to sailors who have perished.
